Owning a machine gun is a more regulated process than buying a semi-automatic weapon, gun law experts said.
"If a person can go to a gun store and buy a gun, they can own a machine gun," said Ronnie Yates, a Magnolia-based attorney who specializes in gun laws. "But there are more hoops to jump through."
Buyers must pay special taxes and pass a rigorous background check, Yates said. The law prohibits firearms purchases and gun transfers made before 1986, when federal laws banned widespread ownership of auto-fire weapons.
